Get to know Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main, usually known simply as Frankfurt, is a central German city on the banks of the river Main. With almost 800,000 inhabitants within the city limits and about 5.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is the most populous city in the German state of Hesse and fifth-most populous in Germany.

Home to the European Central Bank, Frankfurt is one of the largest financial and trading centres in Europe. Banks and the stock exchange are probably the first things that come to mind when you think of Frankfurt. In fact, the city has earned the nicknames “Bankfurt” and “Mainhattan.”

But that is not all the city has to offer. There is much more to Germany’s financial hub than businesses, trade fairs, and skyscrapers. Frankfurt is a city of great diversity. It is where tradition meets modernity, where you can bask in the aura of a time-honoured old town nestled in the heart of an international metropolis.

Art and culture

Culture-lovers will find plenty of things to see in Frankfurt. One of the leading cultural hubs in Germany and Europe, Frankfurt’s vast cultural offerings on both sides of the River Main attract tourists from all over the world.

Home to history museums and art galleries galore, over the years Frankfurt has developed widespread renown as one of Germany’s leading locations for museums. Much of this reputation is due to the magnificent Museumsufer (Museum Embankment).

The unique landscape of museums lined up on both banks of the river Main is a wonder to behold. One of Germany’s preeminent art museums, the magnificent Städel, is at the heart of Frankfurt’s museum district. With centuries of art under one roof, it features masterpieces of European art from the early fourteenth century to the present. Feast your eyes on famous artistic masterpieces, ancient sculptures of bygone times, as well as modern artworks.

One of the most important art museums in Germany, Städel might be the pick of the bunch, but it is definitely not the only museum of note in the city. The German Film Museum, Museum of Architecture, and Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery are just three of the 60 or so art institutions in the city.
